Course Overview
This course has been specifically designed for learners without a background in the Community and Social Services (Client Services) Eldercare industry. This competency unit equips the learners with essential skills in assisting clients with clinical care needs such as common health and mental conditions, measure and record human vital signs and administering medication.

Course Outline
Part 1 Assist clients with common health conditions
- Recognise signs and symptoms of common chronic and acute health conditions afflicting clients as well as its risks
- Provide appropriate care and support to better manage clients common chronic and acute diseases in accordance with regulatory requirements and guidelines
- Apply contingency management skills in the event of emergencies caused by common chronic and acute health conditions in clients according to organisational procedures
Part 2 Assist clients with common mental health conditions
- Recognise signs and symptoms of common mental health conditions afflicting the elderly as well as its risks
- Provide appropriate care and support to better manage clients common mental health conditions in accordance with regulatory requirements and guidelines
- Apply contingency management skills in the event of emergencies caused by common mental health conditions in clients according to organisational procedures
Part 3 Measure and record vital signs of clients
- Identify the different vital signs to be measured according to the care plan
- Prepare appropriate tools and equipment for taking the different vital signs in accordance with regulatory requirements and guidelines
- Conduct proper health and hygiene procedures prior to and after measuring vital signs
- Prepare clients for measurement of vital signs by using appropriate language and good communication techniques
- Measure and interpret readings of vital signs according to established procedures taking into consideration relevant factors
- Clean and restore tools and equipment used according to regulatory requirements and guidelines
- Dispose of consumable items according to regulatory requirements and guidelines
- Record and report readings of vital signs, highlighting abnormal readings or difficulties in measuring vital signs in accordance with organisational guidelines
Part 4 Assist in administering medication for clients
- Apply proper health and hygiene procedures prior to and after assisting in medication administration
- Assist clients in administering medication according to established procedures and relevant legislative requirements
- Monitor side effects of medications administered to clients
- Report administration of medication, highlighting any side-effects or changes in clients condition that may impact their ability to self-administer medication according to organisational procedures

Certification Obtained and Conferred by
Upon completion of the course, a Statement of Attainment (SOA) from SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) will be issued.
